The Mighty Diamonds was een Jamaicaans harmonietrio dat rootsreggae opnam met een sterke Rastafari-invloed. De groep werd opgericht in 1969 en was vooral bekend om hun debuutalbum uit 1976, Right Time, geproduceerd door Joseph Hoo Kim, en de release uit 1979, Deeper Roots.

Op 29 maart 2022 werd hun leadzanger, Donald “Tabby” Shaw, doodgeschoten bij een drive-by shooting. Op 1 april 2022 stierf Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson. Kort daarna gingen ze uit elkaar.

Geschiedenis
De groep werd opgericht in 1969 in het Trenchtown-gebied van Kingston en bestond uit leadzanger Donald “Tabby” Shaw en harmoniezangers Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson en Lloyd “Judge” Ferguson. Ze waren vrienden geworden op school in het midden van de jaren 1960 en heetten oorspronkelijk The Limelight, waarbij ze ‘Mighty Diamonds’ adopteerden nadat Shaw’s moeder naar hen begon te verwijzen als “de diamanten”. Hun soepele harmonieën en gechoreografeerde podiumshow werden geïnspireerd door Motown-vocale groepen uit de jaren 1960, waarbij Shaw The Temptations, The Stylistics, The Impressions en The Delfonics als invloeden noemde, evenals Jamaicaanse rocksteady-artiesten zoals John Holt en Ken Boothe. 

Hun vroege opnamen werden geproduceerd door Pat Francis, Stranger Cole (“Girl You Are Too Young” (1970), “Oh No Baby”), Derrick Harriott (“Mash Up”), Bunny Lee (“Jah Jah Bless the Dreadlocks”, “Carefree Girl”), Lee “Scratch” Perry (“Talk About It”) en Rupie Edwards, maar het was in 1973 dat ze hun eerste hitsingle hadden met het door Francis geproduceerde “Shame and Pride”, opgenomen in de Dynamic Sounds studio. Het was hun werk uit het midden van de jaren 1970 met producer Joseph Hoo Kim dat hen hun echte doorbraak gaf.  “Country Living” en “Hey Girl” werden opgenomen en uitgebracht door het Channel One-label. “Right Time” volgde, op Hoo Kim’s Well Charge-label, en bevestigde hun status als een van de beste Jamaicaanse groepen van die tijd. 

Virgin Records tekende hen en het debuutalbum van de groep, Right Time, werd uitgebracht in 1976, inclusief de meeste van hun vroege Channel One-hits. Het album was een internationaal succes en voor de follow-up stuurde Virgin hen om samen te werken met Allen Toussaint in New Orleans, met lokale muzikanten die de ondersteuning verzorgden. Het resulterende Ice on Fire-album verkocht slecht, de productie was niet aantrekkelijk voor reggaefans, en het album werd later beschreven als “een poging van New Orleans-soulmuzikanten om reggae te spelen”.

Terug in Jamaica bleven ze opnemen voor Channel One, met het album Stand Up to Your Judgment dat in 1978 werd uitgebracht, en bleven ze een reeks hitsingles produceren. Ze brachten ook platen uit op hun eigen ‘Bad Gong’-label. De groep Deeper Roots, uitgebracht in 1979, was hun volgende grote albumsucces, opnieuw uitgebracht door Virgin, op het Front Line-label. 

In het begin van de jaren 1980 namen ze op met producer Gussie Clarke, grotendeels met behulp van oude Studio One-tracks als basis voor hun opnames, en dubplates van deze sessies werden populair op geluidssystemen in Jamaica, New York en Londen, met name “Pass the Kouchie”, opgenomen op de “Full Up” riddim. Hun werk met Clarke produceerde het album Changes uit 1981.

“Pass the Kouchie”, geschreven door Ferguson en Simpson, werd twee keer een internationale hit, toen het voor het eerst werd uitgebracht (op hun album Changes uit 1982) en opnieuw toen het werd gecoverd door Musical Youth met gewijzigde tekst om de verwijzingen naar drugs te verwijderen, en uitgebracht als “Pass the Dutchie” (1982). 

Hun optreden op Reggae Sunsplash in 1982 werd later dat jaar uitgebracht op een album, gecombineerd met het optreden van Mutabaruka. 

De groep bleef regelmatig albums uitbrengen en paste zich met succes aan de heersende digitale ritmes van de jaren 1980 en daarna aan. Tabby, Bunny en Judge brachten in hun lange carrière meer dan veertig albums uit.

In 2021 werd de groep geëerd met de Order of Distinction (Officer Class) in de National Honours and Awards, ter gelegenheid van Jamaica’s 59e verjaardag van de onafhankelijkheid. 

Op 29 maart 2022 werd Donald “Tabby” Shaw samen met een andere persoon doodgeschoten op McKinley Crescent in St Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica. Drie anderen raakten gewond bij de schietpartij. De volgende vrijdag, 1 april, stierf mede-ondertekenaar van de groep, Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson in een niet nader genoemd ziekenhuis in Kingston.
